At the risk of yet again exposing my inner nerd… I LOVE Pick Your Own produce. You just can’t get a fresher taste than straight off the tree. And what’s more, you get to spend a day outdoors, eating to your heart’s content. Growing up, we had ten fruit trees in our backyard and still found the need to venture up to Wisconsin or Michigan a few times a year to stock up on big batches of apples and to get our hands on the real the prize – the berries. (Pick Your Own berries are NOTHING like what you find in grocery stores. Beware – they will make you a berry snob for life.) Between the seemingly thousands of pears, cherries, apples, plums, peaches, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries I’ve picked in my lifetime, I thought I’d done it all.
I was wrong.
CITRUS. Yes, I know these are in abundance in places like Florida or California, but as a Midwestern girl plopped down in a Southwestern landscape, I was delightfully surprised to see oranges EVERYWHERE once ‘winter’ hit in Arizona. After one too many awkward instances of Jake pulling over so I could pillage a neighbor’s tree, we decided to get our fruit the legal way… It was time to go citrus picking.
Success. Truman Ranch delivered 80 types of citrus and for 20 bucks, we took a whopping forty pounds of oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes and pummelos home. (By the way, the pummelos rivaled the berries. The taste was all I could describe as…. sunshine and lemon meringue pie.)
Here’s the site I have now frequented far too many times: www.pickyourown.org. For my fellow nerds
