“What makes you happy?” I asked him. “Say the first thing that comes to mind.”
“FISHING,” was the automatic response. We could make that happen. It didn’t take long to find our weekend retreat: Woods Canyon Lake seemed to be the perfect serene setting with cooler weather, pines, and TROUT!
So maybe the trout thing didn’t pan out. Supposedly they were in there, but they didn’t seem to want to bite. Regardless, the lake still delivered. At under a two hour drive from sunny Scottsdale, it gave us a much needed respite from the desert. Constant warmth and cloudless blue skies are a blessing at most times of year, but we’re still Midwestern kids, and crisp air and crunchy leaves will likely be things we’ll always crave at the holidays. And I’ll take any excuse I can get to pack a picnic.
Tip for next time: hiking 5 miles with 40 pounds of gear and goods is not a good idea. The decision to continue our loop around the lake post-picnicking, rather than just turn around and head back the way we came, might have been one of our more foolish ones…. but I’m always a sucker for views so it was still worth it in my book.
Now for a view with ZERO effort: the Vista Point just outside the park, overlooking the Mongollon rim. Mission accomplished: we got our fill our of trees!
